How to Save a Webpage as PDF in Chrome

Saving a webpage as PDF preserves the entire page as a document for offline reading, archiving, or sharing. Chrome's built-in "Print to PDF" reformats the page for paper — breaking layouts, removing backgrounds, and paginating content. The Capture Full Page extension takes a different approach: it captures the page as a visual screenshot (preserving the exact layout you see in the browser) and exports it as a PDF document. This means responsive designs, CSS animations (as rendered), and complex layouts are preserved pixel-perfectly. Capture the entire scrolling page, the visible viewport, or a selected region, annotate in the built-in editor with arrows, text, and highlights, then click PDF to export. For a comparison of all Chrome screenshot export options, see our guide on saving screenshots as PDF. You can also copy to clipboard for quick sharing.

Method 1: Capture Full Page — Visual PDF Export

Capture the webpage as a visual screenshot and export as PDF. The PDF preserves the exact visual appearance — no reformatting, no broken layouts. This is ideal for archiving pages that use complex CSS, responsive design, or dynamic content.

  1. 1Install Capture Full Page from the Chrome Web Store.
  2. 2Navigate to the webpage you want to save as PDF.
  3. 3Click the extension icon and choose "Capture Full Page" for the entire page, or another mode for a specific section.
  4. 4The extension auto-scrolls and captures the complete page with all visual elements intact.
  5. 5Optionally annotate in the editor — add arrows, highlights, or notes.
  6. 6Click the PDF button in the toolbar — the PDF is generated locally and saved to Downloads.

Method 2: Chrome Print to PDF

Chrome's built-in Ctrl+P → "Save as PDF" reformats the webpage for paper printing. Layouts change, backgrounds may be removed, and the visual design is often lost.

  1. 1Press Ctrl+P (Cmd+P on Mac) to open the Print dialog.
  2. 2Set destination to "Save as PDF."
  3. 3Adjust settings: paper size, margins, scale, background graphics.
  4. 4Click Save — the page is reformatted for print, which often breaks the original layout.
  5. 5Result: text-based PDF with pagination, not a visual representation of the page.

Method 3: Online Webpage-to-PDF Converters

Web services like PrintFriendly or web2pdf convert URLs to PDF, but they require uploading the URL to external servers and produce variable results.

  1. 1Copy the webpage URL.
  2. 2Open an online converter and paste the URL.
  3. 3Wait for the service to fetch and render the page.
  4. 4Download the PDF — quality varies, and login-required or dynamic pages often fail.
  5. 5Privacy concern: the page content is processed on third-party servers.

Usein kysytyt kysymykset

What's the difference between Print to PDF and saving a webpage as a visual PDF?
Print to PDF reformats the page for paper — it changes the layout, paginates content, and often removes backgrounds and decorative elements. Capture Full Page creates a visual PDF: a pixel-perfect screenshot of the page as it appears in your browser, embedded as an image in a PDF document. The visual layout, colors, and design are preserved exactly.
Can I save a full scrolling page as PDF?
Yes. Select "Capture Full Page" to auto-scroll and capture the entire page, then click PDF to export. The complete page — including all content below the fold — is saved as a single PDF document. This works for very long pages up to 100,000 pixels in height.
Will login-required pages work?
Yes. Capture Full Page captures what is currently displayed in your browser tab. If you're logged into a site, the extension captures the authenticated content. Online converters cannot do this because they fetch the URL from their own servers without your session.
Can I annotate the page before saving as PDF?
Yes. After capturing, the screenshot opens in the built-in editor. Add arrows pointing to important sections, text labels for context, highlights to emphasize content, or step numbers for instructions. All annotations are included in the exported PDF.
Is the PDF generated locally?
Yes. The PDF is generated entirely in your browser — no data is sent to any server. The file is saved directly to your Downloads folder. This makes it safe for confidential pages, internal dashboards, and sensitive content.
